Eight Miles

“Halfway point,” my Ipod announced to me this afternoon. “Four miles to go.” I thought, for a moment, that the woman speaking to me sounded a little different today, then realized her monotone voice changes with my own moods. Today she sounded the way someone would sound if they were saying, “I’m so sorry to hear that.” Detached halfhearted sympathy. I ran a little farther before I swung around on my toes and started back over the bridge, so that I could end my run before I finished the trail, and walk back over the last stretch to the road, listening to the quiet grating of my feet against the gravel, and wondering what comes next in my day, or in my life.
