Crazy Love

As my runs are edging up into double digit mileage in preparation for an upcoming half marathon, I decided to start taking a supplement called Gu mid-run. After pouring the chocolatey sludge down my throat and washing it into my system with water, I was amazed at how my weary muscles found new life as the stuff worked its way through my blood stream, how effortlessly I picked up pace after over an hour of continuous running. I thought about whoever it was that invented this, capitalizing on the knowledge that, even when our bodies are screaming at us to stop, there are some people who know only how to keep moving. I imagined someone sitting down with a plan, a magic concoction of electrolytes and caffeine and carbohydrates, to alleviate the pain of this crazy love, this madness that tears our nails from the beds of our toes and blisters our heels and sucks the last drops of glucose from our thirsty tendons, and somehow, all the same, makes the world seem whole and real, makes living a tangible, vibrant, miraculous phenomenon, makes absolutely everything seem possible.
