The Right Ear

I told her that the chaos of my present life is being reflected in my practice, and my meditation teacher told me to close my eyes.

“Take a few minutes, and find a place that feels safe on your body. Let me know when you find it.”
Five minutes pass.
In desperation: “Nothing feels safe…”
“Okay. How is your stomach?”
“Unsettled. Unpleasant.”
“How are your hands?”
Grimacing: “I hold a lot of tension there.”
“Your chest?”
“Hard. Tense.”
Long pause.
“How is your right ear?”
Another long pause.
“…My right ear is doing okay.”
“Then that is where you will practice. Until life feels safe again, you can rest your attention there, for hours, for days, for however long it takes.”
