Scraps

(On the other hand, I was still writing last spring. I found this on a scrap of paper in one of those mini-notebooks I cart around in my purse. Based on the pages before and after I’m guessing I wrote it sometime shortly after a trip to Chicago in April. No title on it.)

The year I started
doubting my decisions

a groundhog mosied out
of the bramble and did
not notice me.

I watched him eat spiny
nuts off the pavement

from the passenger seat
of the used car I had been
sitting in for hours.

It’s strange how these
details, so useless in
their beauty, will cause

us to long bitterly later on.
