Paralysis vs. Aliveness

After she listened patiently over the phone as I went on with the many woes of my life, and all my indecisiveness, and all my fretting over the happiness of others, she quoted off the top of her head from a source she couldn’t remember, which turned out to be Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

When I was three, a pile of autumn leaves did the trick. And icicles in the sun. And dandelions. And monarch butterflies.

When I was twenty-four…
