Things We Overlook Until Autumn

My front lawn is covered in leaves that were swept up in gusts of sudden wind from neighboring trees and scattered across the earth, most of them golden yellow and tan. Yesterday there were dozens of leaves on my porch and front steps that were about a foot wide: enormous, otherworldly, pale yellow, brittle and crisp underfoot, caught in the heavy slant of afternoon sunlight. I discovered that they are coming from a very tall tree of some sort behind my apartment building, near where I park my car. I had never been aware of the size of the leaves on that tree. I had never even been aware that there was a tree there at all.
