Rumination

I’ve finished telling my therapist that I might make a trip to Chicago in March “to feel depressed,” and he is chuckling and has his hand over face, shaking his head and muttering more to himself than to me, “Why would you do that?” But I’m not really looking at him. I’m looking at this picture of one of his daughters on the top of the bookshelf, above the one of him and his pretty wife in one of those frames that says LOVE across the side that you might see in a Kohls or a Target. Half Black, half Chinese, with creamy tan skin and beautiful eyes, she’s standing for a picture in a studio, wearing what is probably a frilly dress, head cocked a little with a big toothed smile that suggests she might know what it means to really be happy.
