There’s An Art To It, Really

Sitting in my office. Bamboo and green flowers in a tall vase on the desk. Calendar on the wall reads April. Picture of some mountains in Canada. White walls I painted months ago. Humming noise I can’t place. Probably the air conditioner. Paperwork: MMPI scales, some notes, a textbook, a laptop, a mug of hot orange spice tea. Sigh. Blank word document. Mumbling to myself. “Let’s draw this boy.” And suddenly, the image of someone smiling at me. We were in a conversation about how no one should ever become a psychologist just to help people. I was trying to explain my reasons. Then, abruptly, that sort of deep but subtle look, the kind you see only rarely, when a person suddenly gets exactly what you mean. “So, you want to paint people?”

Yes.
