I’m not exactly sure when I stopped following recipes. I still read the Allrecipes spam in my inbox. I still follow cooking blogs, and page through vegetarian cookbooks at bookstores, and always pause on the food page in Runners World. But somewhere along the way, it became an art, to make up for all the art that should but doesn’t fill the emotional fissures in my life. Somehow guesstimating on cayenne replaced a well written stanza, and everything in my orderly life culminates in the evening in a giant unpredictable experiment, some sort of eggplant curry or ginger peanut stirfry or homemade eggrolls or vegetable risotto or in this case, a big pot of jambalaya, boiling away on my stove right now, making little pop pop noises and filled with uncertain quantities of cumin and paprika and vegetables and vegan sausage.
