In the mornings, after leaving my father’s condo, I run through a garden of 55+ communities: Delray Villas, Rainberry Woods, Ashley Lakes, Palm Springs, Bridgeview, Delray Lakes, Country Manor, Palm Greens – all garnished with golf courses and strip malls. Beyond the over-manicured lawns and gated walls, white elderly Florida remains oblivious of the diverse despair that crowds in around it. Stay to the left on that route, I’m told, for the right is quite dodgy. Passing Rainberry Woods, peering to the right, my heart is aching and threatening to break at the seams where I’ve so carefully sewn it back together one too many times.
