Beauty Without Purpose

The night before it all fell apart, she was sitting by the window crying, with her cat curled up around her neck, purring and indifferent, watching the light fade. Outside there was a dog barking, and she watched him spin and jump with no clear purpose. Then she saw it. All around him, the green and yellow flashes in the twilight. Fireflies, fireflies, everywhere fireflies in the dusky light.
