Good Management

In the late afternoon, the manager of the entire store – not my team lead, not the assistant manager, but the big boss, the one I never see because she is busy running around with a stressed smile trying to keep this metropolis of a store from burning to the ground in all its vegan organic glory, walked up to me and handed me a pot of violets, telling me to keep them, because I looked like I was having a hard day and could use a pick me up. And then she was gone, setting out fires and beaming at strangers like they were ancient friends, as I set my flowers by the register and put on my best glassy eyed smile for the perpetual line of Saturday guests, their baskets brimming with whole trade apples and upper class entitlement.
