Outside

I remember one night in Cincinnati, we escaped from an obligatory grueling visit to your smothering mother and bewildering but adorable offspring, and went to a fancy wine bar in Hyde Park to talk about life and love by the fireplace. They had discontinued their dinner menu, so we decided to go in search of Taco Bell in the late hours of the night, and I remember the song that came on the radio, and how we serenaded each other in the dark as you drove those city streets in your used BMW with your cool and distant gaze and your hand wrapped in mine over the gear stick, and I remember how happy I was, how simple everything was, to be by your side.

Today, when the song came on the radio, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the musical selection we accidentally chose as our duet that night was.
